Your guide to designing an engagement ring
Our ring builder lets you design your own engagement ring online in three simple steps: choose a certified diamond, pick the setting you love, then review your ring before you order. Here is everything you need to know to choose with confidence.
1. Choosing your diamond
Every diamond in our builder is independently graded by GIA or IGI, two of the world's most respected gemmological laboratories, and comes with its grading report. To keep quality high, we only offer diamonds that meet our standards:
Colour: D to I, from exceptionally white to near-colourless
Clarity: VS2 or higher, so inclusions are not visible to the naked eye
Cut: Very Good, Excellent or Ideal, for maximum brilliance
Carat weight is the diamond's size. Cut has the biggest effect on sparkle, so a well-cut diamond often looks more impressive than a larger, poorly cut one. Learn more in our diamond guide.
2. Lab-grown or natural?
You can choose either. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same chemical, physical and optical properties as mined diamonds, grown in a controlled environment. They typically cost far less than a natural diamond of the same size and grade, so your budget goes further.
Natural diamonds formed deep in the earth over billions of years, and many people value their rarity and heritage. Both are graded to the same standards and are equally hard-wearing for everyday wear.
3. Choosing a shape
The builder offers ten diamond shapes: round, oval, emerald, pear, princess, cushion, radiant, marquise, heart and Asscher. Round brilliants give the most sparkle. Oval, pear and marquise shapes can look larger for their carat weight and lengthen the finger. Emerald and Asscher cuts have elegant step-cut facets with a clean, vintage feel.
4. Choosing your setting
Once you've chosen your diamond, select from over 50 settings, each showing which shapes and sizes it suits:
Solitaire: a single diamond on a plain band, timeless and understated
Pavé: small diamonds set along the band for extra sparkle
Halo: a ring of diamonds around the centre stone for added presence
Three-stone: representing your past, present and future
5. Choosing your metal
Settings are available in 9ct, 14ct or 18ct white or yellow gold, 18ct rose gold, or platinum. The higher the carat, the higher the gold content: 18ct gold has a richer colour, while 9ct is a more affordable option. Platinum is naturally white, dense and very durable, making it a popular choice for a ring worn every day.
Ring builder FAQs
How does the ring builder work?
Start by choosing your diamond, filtering by shape, carat, colour, clarity, cut, price and lab-grown or natural. Then choose a setting and metal, and review your complete ring before adding it to your basket. You can change your diamond or setting at any point before ordering.
Are the diamonds certified?
Yes. Every diamond is independently graded by GIA or IGI and comes with its grading report, so you know exactly what you're buying.
What is the difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds?
Both are real diamonds with the same hardness, sparkle and chemical make-up. Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment and usually cost significantly less. Natural diamonds formed in the earth over billions of years and are valued for their rarity.
How long will my ring take?
Each ring is made to order, so it takes longer than an in-stock item. We'll confirm the expected timescale for your ring. If you need it for a particular date, such as a proposal, please contact us before ordering so we can confirm we can meet it.
Is delivery free?
Yes. Standard UK delivery is free on every order and is sent with a tracked Royal Mail service, such as Special Delivery, depending on the value. International delivery is also available.
Can I return my ring?
Rings made to your own specification may not be covered by our change-of-mind returns promise. We'll tell you before you order if this applies. Your rights for faulty or incorrect items are always protected. See our refund policy for full details.
I don't know their ring size. What should I do?
Get in touch and we'll help you work out the right size. If you're planning a surprise proposal, we're happy to talk you through discreet ways to find out.
Can I design something that isn't in the builder?
Of course. If you have a design in mind, a coloured gemstone or a stone you'd like to reuse, start a bespoke design and we'll create something entirely unique for you.
Do you offer a price match?
Yes. If you've found a like-for-like certified diamond for less elsewhere, contact us with the details and we'll take a look.
